5G 코어 네트워크에서 사용자 위치 정보는 코어 네트워크가 스스로 직접 알아낼 수 있는 정보가 아닙니다. UE의 실시간 네트워크 위치는 무선 접속 측, 특히 사용자를 서비스하는 gNB에서 제공됩니다. gNB는 UE가 어느 셀을 사용하는지, 해당 셀이 어느 추적 영역에 속하는지, 무선 측 위치를 상위 네트워크에 어떻게 보고해야 하는지를 알고 있습니다. 따라서 ULI, 즉 User Location Information은 5GC 신호에서 중요한 파라미터입니다.

ULI는 gNB에서 AMF로 NGAP 신호를 통해 전달됩니다. 코어 네트워크는 이를 통해 등록, 이동성 관리, 세션 처리, 정책 제어, 서비스 라우팅, 애플리케이션 노출에 필요한 위치 기준을 확보합니다. 실제 엔지니어링에서 ULI는 도로 주소 수준의 위치 결과가 아닙니다. TAI와 NR CGI 같은 무선 접속 식별자로 구성되는 네트워크 위치 식별 정보입니다. 이러한 식별자를 통해 5G 코어는 추적 영역과 셀 수준에서 UE의 위치를 파악할 수 있습니다.

ULI가 코어에 도달하는 방식

ULI의 보고 방향은 gNB에서 AMF입니다. gNB는 여러 N2 메시지에 ULI 파라미터를 포함하여 AMF가 UE의 현재 네트워크 측 위치를 얻도록 합니다. AMF의 판단은 UE가 어디에 있는지, 어느 추적 영역에 속하는지, 이동성 또는 등록 갱신이 필요한지에 따라 달라지므로 특히 중요합니다.

ULI를 포함할 수 있는 NGAP 메시지에는 PDU Session Resource Release Response, PDU Session Resource Modify Response, PDU Session Resource Notify, UE Context Release Complete, UE Context Modification Response, RRC Inactive Transition Report, Handover Notify, Path Switch Request가 있습니다. NR ULI의 구성 요소

ULI에는 서로 다른 위치 정보 선택지가 정의되어 있습니다. 크게 보면 NSA 관련 환경에서는 E-UTRA ULI를, SA 관련 환경에서는 NR ULI를 포함할 수 있습니다. 5G 단독 모드 네트워크에서는 NR ULI가 핵심입니다.

영역 간 관계

등록 영역, 추적 영역, gNB, 셀의 관계는 5G 이동성을 이해하는 핵심입니다. 하나의 셀은 하나의 기지국에만 속하며 동시에 하나의 추적 영역에만 속합니다. 하나의 추적 영역에는 여러 기지국과 여러 셀이 포함될 수 있습니다. 무선 설계 방식에 따라 하나의 gNB에 속한 서로 다른 셀을 서로 다른 추적 영역에 배정할 수도 있습니다.

AMF 서비스 영역은 여러 추적 영역으로 구성됩니다. 이 서비스 범위 안에서 AMF는 정책에 따라 UE마다 서로 다른 Registration Area를 할당할 수 있습니다. Registration Area에는 하나 이상의 추적 영역이 포함될 수 있습니다. 개념적으로는 4G에서 사용하는 TA List와 비슷하지만 5G 코어 이동성 컨텍스트에 적용됩니다.

Registration Area의 목적은 UE의 도달성을 유지하면서 불필요한 신호를 줄이는 것입니다. UE가 할당된 Registration Area 안에서 이동하면 셀이 바뀔 때마다 이동성 등록 갱신을 발생시킬 필요가 없습니다. 할당된 영역 밖으로 이동하면 MRU, 즉 Mobility Registration Update 절차를 시작해야 합니다.

실제 예로 사용자가 지하철 노선을 따라 이동하는 상황을 생각할 수 있습니다. AMF가 TA1을 포함하는 Registration Area를 할당했고 사용자가 TA1의 gNB에서 TA2의 gNB로 이동하면, 할당된 등록 경계를 넘게 됩니다. AMF가 그대로 유지되더라도 할당된 Registration Area가 변경되었으므로 UE는 MRU를 수행해야 합니다.
